Centro de Vulcanologia e Avaliação de Riscos Geológicos (CVARG)
Centre of Volcanology and Geoogical Risk Assessment
The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Risk Assessment (CVARG) is a research unit of the Azores University, located at S. Miguel island, Azores archipelago. It was statutorily constituted in 1997 as an autonomous nucleus under the Portuguese legislation for research entities, being accredited by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and acknowledged by the Science Department of the Azores Regional Government. CVARG is also member of the World Organization of Volcano Observatories (WOVO) from the IAVCEI.
CVARG research activities are developed within the Earth Sciences domain involving a multidisciplinary approach for the prevention and forecast of natural hazards. In this scope the CVARG's mission is to promote and improve Science and Technology in the area of Volcanology and related domains, in order to understand the volcanological phenomena and to assess the risk directly or indirectly associated with them, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, vapour explosions, toxic gases release, landslides, floods and tsunamis, events that frequently occurred coupled in space and in time, at different scales, as result of complex geological mechanisms.
The scientific structure of CVARG is organised in a single research group, composed of different Scientific Units (UC’s) that are complementary within the multidisciplinary extents of Volcanology and Natural Hazards assessment. Presently are constituted the following UC’s: Physical Volcanology and Magmatism; Neotectonics and Crustal Deformation; Gas Geochemistry; Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology; Landslides and Floods; Risk and Emergency Planning; and Public Health.

Universidade dos Açores (UAc)
University of the Azores
The University of the Azores, it was founded on January 9, 1976, two years after the Carnation Revolution that ended several decades of dictatorship in Portugal, but before the Portuguese Third Republic was institutionalized, along with the Region's Autonomy. The University is a public institution dependent on the Ministry of Science, Technology & Education, and was established in order to advance sustainable development and higher education in the Azores.
In order to effectively provide educational services to regional population, the University established three campuses, in Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), Angra do HeroÃsmo (Terceira) and Horta (Faial) and organized into departments and schools to, essentially, provide instruction and investigation services. In addition to the Main Campus (Ponta Delgada), which provides a concentration of various disciplines, the other two campuses provided specialized training in agrarian sciences and oceangraphy.

European Centre on Geomorphological Hazards
Centre Européen sur les Risques Géomorphologiques
The CERG is both a specialized research centre of the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Partial Agreement of Council of Europe and a non-governmental international association (defined on the basis of the French law 1901) with active and corresponding members.
The CERG objectives are to prepare, conduct and coordinate research activities, training activities, transfer of knowledge activities and expert advices on the prevention of geomorphological and geohydrological hazards and risks, especially landslides, gravitational flows and floods. The CERG is promoting scientific and technical cooperation among European research and training organisations, as well as overseas. The CERG is disseminating methodology and techniques through advanced training courses and guidebooks.
Founded in 1988, CERG includes ca. 75 researchers (geologists, geomorphologists, engineering geologists, hydrologists, geotechnicians) from 23 laboratories and research centres of 14 European countries. Since 1988, the research programmes of the CERG are supported by the European Community and the Council of Europe and occasionally by national research programmes and other administrations.
